ICTs and social n etworks can contribute to the emergence o f creating competent teams for emergency response. For example, d uring disasters such as Pakistan flood of 2010, Japan tsunami of 2011 and Thailand flood of 2011, On -Line S ocial Networks (OSNs) have served as a main technology for numerous people seeking to share information about their personal status, to request resources, or to report the status of their community. They can be used at least for three main functions: detec ting emergencies, disseminating information, and managing emergencies. On the other hand, the combination of Internet and mobile technology generated smart devices with associated sensor technologies that are becoming crucial parts in delivering supports d uring disaster and emergency situation. However, such use of mobile devices usually requires a reliable support system from crowdsensing technologies and back-end intelligent systems. In this way, t he mobile c rowdsensing must be designed with focus on mechanisms to identify and localize survivors and first responders in an incident zone, as well as mechanisms for competence characterization provided by social n etworks to facilitate coordination for individuals as well as crowds. These main technologies, the crowdsensing and social networks combined with semantic web and ontologies can provide a complete emergency response system that is the purpose of the CO-SEMIWA platform. This platform permits an interaction among participan ts to create dynamically competent teams where all participants perform tasks and solve problems in a specific emergency context and situation.

This study analyze s the mechanisms that underlie ehealth uptake in the Netherlands. Taking a Technological Innovation Systems (TIS) approach, through interviews, observation and document analysis the seven functions of the innovation system for ehealth are analyzed and barriers to system development are identified . The study finds that financia l resource mobilization, resistance to change, market formation and to some extent ‘guidance of the search’ are hampering the development of e-health, even though the latter is increasingly taking shape through formation of active networks of health profe ssionals and managers, and ICT professionals. In addition, findings suggest that both organizational and geographical proximity matter in the collaborative development of e -health. It is essential that the mechanisms that hamper the development of ehealth are addressed, if the healthcare system in the Netherlands is to develop towards a truly citizen -centered system. Addressing problems related to financial incentives and business cases, in addition to the creation of stronger inter-organizational networks to spur vision creation and knowledge development and exchange, are means to enhance the functions of the innovation system.

Control rooms for supervising traffic or emergency situations are increasingly introduced in companies and other governmental organisations. Employees of safety-critical workplaces have to deal with a large amount of problems every day: Quick decision -making, coping with an overload of infor mation and stress are the most important. Designing appropriate workplaces for emplo yees in such organisations is essential. The following paper describes the results of an investigation in two companies with control rooms. Results indicate that the systems deployed in such control rooms support the operators efficiently. Stress is a more important influencing factor. We could not find any significant gender effects concerning the design of workplaces in control rooms.

Game design process creates goals, rules, and challenges to define a game that produces desirable interactions among its participants. Modeling the way in which players interact with the game requires among others the definition of game rules, plot, connection between player and the game, etc. ACTA (ACTivity Analysis) is a general purpose finite state machine (FSM) description language for rapid prototyping of smart games. ACTA facilitates smart game design by intervention professionals who are not familiar with traditional programming languages . Professionals are able to model the game’s logic and interaction using a straightforward and intuitive notation which can be customized for every different game. In order to support a customized scripting vocabulary, a reflection-oriented model was adopted allowing dynamic linking between ACTA generated rules and multiple data types. Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) is the “glue layer” connecting AC TA’s scripting vocabulary with the application internals. Moreover, developers can use ACTA not only for developing event -driven sequential logic games, but also for applications of behavior composed of a finite number of states, transitions between those states and actions , as well as for applications based on rules driven workflows. As a case study illustrating the usefulness and benefits of ACTA, a body posture imitation game, called Mimesis game, was developed based on occupational therapy expertise and practice.

In this study, I explore how activity objects orchestrate knowledge for crowdsourced digital innovation. Adopting a mixed -methods research approach, my quantitative results from 355 questionnaires corroborate the three hypotheses, and my qualitative evidence collected from 48 interviews enriches and adds depth to my explanations. As a result, I found that by acting as a trigger for expansive learning, and a director and motivator of crowdsourcing communities, activity objects serve to facilitate the sharing , acquisition, and integration of knowledge, coordinating knowledge heterogeneity and countering its fragmentation for crowdsourced digital innovation.

The analysis of large amounts of data has become an important task in science and business that led to the emergence of the Big Data paradigm. This paradigm owes its name to data objects too large to be processed by standard hardware and algorithms. Many data analysis tasks involve the use of machine learning techniques. The goal of predictive models consists on achieving the highest possible accuracy to predict new samples, and for this reason there is high interest in selecting the most suitable algorithm for a specific dataset. Selecting the most suitable algorithm together with feature selection and data preparation techniques integrates the Full Model Selection paradigm a nd it has been widely studied in datasets of common size, but poorly explored in the Big Data context. As an effort to explore in this direction, this work proposes a framework adjustable to any population based meta-heuristic methods in order to perform model selection under the MapReduce paradigm.

Knowledge is lacking on the choice and use of representations in a design process when seeking to investigate user experiences. Two types of representations (a storyboard and an interactive prototype) of the same system were used in a user experience evaluation involving 24 participants to investigate how different representation formats influence participants' responses to interactive systems. Data from a questionnaire and individual interviews were compared. Very few differences in questionnaire responses were found. However, the interactive prototype gave rise to more design proposals as well as more personal reflections on experiences although with a focus on interface design details. The storyboard elicited more responses on the core ideas of the concept, but less grounded in reflections on personal use. The differences are attributed to how each representation managed to convey interactivity and context, resulting in differences in experienced agency. It is therefore suggested that there is a need for further research, but with less focus on the type of system representation and more focus on how the content and affordances of system representations can be designed to elicit rich and personal reflections on user experience in early design phases.

Human factors play a key role on the improvement of energy efficiency at the workplace. Hence, they should be taken into account. Literature on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) has demonstrated that ‘one-size-fits-all’ solutions fail addressing the user diversity in office environments. Therefore, this paper exposes how User Centered Design (UCD) and User Experience (UX) can act as pivotal tools to enhance user engagement i n digital interfaces that promote sustainable behaviour at work. To accomplish this goal, a digital interface that offers a range of strategies and functions directed to different user archetypes has been designed and evaluated both quantitatively and qualitatively. Analysed data revealed the importance of the UX to design positive interac tions which is a predictor of future system usage and engagement. The diversity of users and the impact of UCD on the Design for Sustainable Behaviour are discussed. Besides, future iterations of the design of a digital system that adapts dynamically to us er profiles are proposed.

Background: With increased popularity in the use of ICT in healthcare to provide support to individuals, it is imperative to investigate the impact of ICT on social support measures in health and social care. Objective: This study aims to review literature on the effectiveness of ICT-based tools and intervention on social support measures with reference to health and illness. Methods: Relevant databases (PubMed \MEDLINE, clinicaltrials.gov and Cochrane Library) were systematically searched using a combination of key search terms. To be included in the review, studies had to be published in English language, be published between 2000 and 2017, apply ICT intervention on a health-related condition and report the effect of ICT on social support measures. Results: The database search produced 4,226 articles. After screening, 30 eligible papers were selected for the review. The studies were quite heterogeneous in terms of study design, age of participants, reported outcome, outcome measuring tool and health condition of participants. 20% of included studies were rated as low -quality evidence, wi th a high risk of research bias. Over 75% of reviewed studies reported a positive impact of ICT on social support measures. The results show that ICT interventions have a statistically significant positive impact on social support measures. Social network was found to have the most impact on social support measures. Conclusion: There is need for more high -quality research on the effect of ICT on social support measures. The results of this systematic review suggest that ICT could effectively provide social support to individuals, although the degree of its effect could depend on the nature of ICT tool used and the well-being status of individuals. Further work in the use of ICT to provide social support for preventive healthcare is recommended. Also, more re search investigating the effect of Smartphone -based instant messaging applications (such as WhatsApp and Snapchat) and virtual reality technology on social support is encouraged.
