Despite the large amount of methods and applications of augmented reality, there is little homogenization on the software platforms that support them. An exception may be the low level control software that is provided by some high profile vendors such as Qualcomm and Metaio. However, these provide fine grain modules for e.g. element tracking. We are more co ncerned on the application framework, that includes the control of the devices working together for the development of the AR experience. In this paper we describe the development of a software framework for AR setups. We concentrate on the modular design of the framework, but also on some hard problems such as the calibration stage, crucial for projection -based AR. The developed framework is suitable and has been tested in AR applications using camera-projector pairs, for both fixed and nomadic setups.

Research has shown that large IT programmes in e-government and e-health are challenging not only in terms of project failures and high costs, but also that the public and sectorial discourses greatly influences the trajectori es and outcomes of me ga-programmes. However, few IS studies have investigated this phenomenon in much depth, and the aim of this contribution is to shed more light on the relationship of discourse and mega-programmes. We build loosely on Foucault’s discourse concept and on Swanson’ term of organising vision, but frame our investigation in information infrastructure theory. Our empirical evidence is a 15 -year study of the growth of the national e -health infrastructure in Norway, which we investigate at three levels, where we analyse the interplay of t he eHealth discourse and the various programme initiatives. First we identify the system formations that bring about change as well as analysing their content. Then w e identify and discuss a pattern where windows of opportunity open and narrow in waves of discourse and action. We also contribute to the information infrastructure research by highlighting the role of discourse in infrastructure evolution.

Developers and designers working with assistive technologies for the oldest gener ation often aim at tailoring the interface and interaction mechanisms after the experiences and competences of their users. We have studied what role materials can have in these design processes by investigating to what degree the material used in the desi gned artifact itself can help elderly users connect with the technology. More precisely, we report from a study of how the use of different materials influences the perceived familiarity, context-suitability, and intuitiveness of new interfaces and interac tion mechanisms. We present our thematically analyzed results from a two-phase study involving 59 participants residing or working in two local care homes in Oslo. Through our findings, we present several examples of how addressing the particular use of ma terials can trigger different intuitive actions and gestures among the participants, as well as help the participants relate to the technologies and their intended use.

There is currently an ongoing debate within HCI community regarding the legitimacy of design objects as producers and carriers of knowledge. This paper takes a Research through Design methodological approach to making such an object, RepMoves, with a purpose to explore its use and usefulness and demonstrate how new knowledge can arise while exploring and experimenting with design objec ts. In this paper, RepMoves is used to address rhythmic and repetitive bodily interaction with music as a welfare technology concept for senior citizens with cognitive difficulties related to the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, and in one example, an individual with Parkinson. We show how RepMoves interface was adapted for use in each of these cases , how movements and interfaces were changed, and most importantly, RepMoves' potential to generate knowledge and research opportunities.

Minimally invasive surgery often makes use of endos copes with an angled lens. When using such an endoscope, the on-screen image tends to rotate wild ly, which may confuse the surgeon. A low-impact way of solving this problem is by using computer vi sion techniques to track the rotation of the incomi ng footage and then counterrotating the image. Such an approach has already been proposed in the literature, but it has never been examined whether it is possible to integrate such an algorithm into a state-of-the-art Digital Operating Room environment, where minimal latency is required. In this paper, we compare three different ways of implementing a c ounterrotation algorithm on the hardware that is available in the NUCLeUS Digital Operating Room of the company eSaturnus.

We present a novel approach for processing and rendering large point cloud data from 3D scanners on a standard computer system. Our technique handles a data size that typically exceeds the RAM for processing and the VRAM for rendering the data . We achieve interactive framerates and a smooth visualization by enhancing existing large data visualization techniques, like Level of Detail and deferred rendering approaches and we utilize the new capabilities of modern GPU hardware. This enables the exploration of large and unstructured 3d scan data sets whose size is only limited by the hard disk memory available. We verify our approach at the example of different data sets with up to one billion 3D points.

Topological properties of graphs derived from social network platforms, like Twitter, give important insights on the nature of the social activities or on the way information spreads over the network. It may have also a relevant impact on designing new applications and improving already existing services. Different types of relations among the nodes define different graphs th at can be analyzed, by tracking how relations evolve over time. Usually, this is performed in a cumulative way: once an edge is inserted, it is never deleted, see Leskovec et al. (2005) and Leskovec et al. (2010) . However, the tweet life is limited, spanning from its birth to the very last retweet it receives. Therefore, we want to analyze the dynamics of evolutionary graphs, that is deleting tweets and thus edges among the nodes when they naturally expire as well as accounts that become therefore inactive. We introduce a variant of the retweet graph which takes into account the dynamics of Twitter users: Dynamic Retweet Graph (DRG) . In a DRG , once a tweet has been retweeted the last time all the edges representing this tweet are deleted, to model the decay of tweet life in the social platform. We analyze the characteristics of this graph using three different Twitter streams, built on three different contexts: two are event based (the 2015 Black Friday and the 2015 World Series), the third is the firehose of the whole Twitter stream, filtered by the Italian language. We use some standard social network analysis metrics to compare the structural properties of the DRG graph with cumulative evolving graphs.

Increasingly, persuasive technologies are used to convince, stimulate and motivate users to engage in healthy behaviours. Currently persuasive technologies are based either on social psychology theories (the user compare s him/herself with other people ), se lf-determination ( human behaviour is a result of a decision that was either taken autonomously or that was rather imposed to a person ), goal -setting (process by which people attempt to constrain unwanted urges by gaining control over the impulsive response), or health belief model (individual’s perception of the severity, benefit, barrier of a situation or action to perform). However few approaches have tried to integrate user’s emotion. In this paper we present a persuasive e -coaching framework which explicitly consider and integrate the emotion in the decision making process. Toward the objective to deploy such solution, the first critical step is to identify a sensor configuration that is accurate enough and minimally invasive. We present the results obtained with only one physiological sensor.

In this paper we identify the role of models in design thinking (DT) to bridge the gap between design and engineering. Models as artifacts help c ross the boundaries from designers to other disciplines like engineering. We introduce our approach ( mDT, multidisciplinary Design Thinking ) by describing its methods including the steps showing how to carry out them in a design project. We show how the results of a DT process can be handed over to others. We focus on the characteristics of the artifacts DT induce. We introduce the notion of design models in this context consisting of use, systems and interaction models. We illustrate our mDT by giving some examples from a previous DT project before concluding the paper.

Clinimetrics is gaining significance in health related and clinical disciplines. However, obtaining and accessing outcome measures in a flexible manner is an issue because of difficult -to-use programs, fixed instruments and poor access to tools and results. Hence, we developed and evaluated a novel Software-as-a-Service to create, share, conduct and manage clinical screenings and tests. The service supports a wide variety of screening instruments. These instruments can then be used in a wide variety of ways: online and offline; on smartphone, tablet and computer; guided by a professional, or self-assessed. Both tests and results can be managed and shared among peers and patients. New screenings can be designed based on standard ized instruments or tailored to outcome measure requirements. The service, called ReQuest, was successfully implemented in multiple research projects. Evaluation results show good acceptance in elderly asked to use the system for self -assessments. Researchers who use the service to conduct and manage screenings, value (i) secure on-site storage, (ii) the flexibility in which they can create or reuse screenings and (iii) sharing screenings with others.

This paper examines the factor s that determine the acceptance and satisfaction for Web self -service for IT-problems. A case study has been conducted to gain more insights in the acceptance and customer satisfaction of Web self -service within a financial organization in the Netherlands. In the stream of automation innovations Web self -service plays an important role. The Web-based self -service technologies are expected to facilitate an improvement in customer satisfaction for the organization and at the same time redu ce operating costs. However, despite the benefits of the web self-service for the organization, users do not have to perceive self-service technologies as favorable for themselves. For the business organizations it is not clear what factors contribute to a successful acceptan ce of Web self-service for the purpose of improving end-user satisfaction. This study integrates e -service quality aspects, (SERVQUAL) customer satisfaction and the Technology Acceptance Model into a new conceptual model. The relevant hypotheses are tested by survey data collected from 149 respondents of a financial organization. The results indicate that the most important factor for the end-users acceptance is how well the web self -service is perceived to be useful and easy to use. This perception, in it s turn, is influenced by a degree and impact the e -services quality aspects have on the overall customer’s satisfaction. The more the end -user is satisfied the more he feels the services are useful. The proposed model explained 29.9% of the variance in behavioral intention to use Web self-service.
